Straw Weaving

The uses of straw are abundant.  Cows and horses will munch on it, mattresses used to be stuffed with it, a house can be thatched with it, and a scarecrow wouldn’t be himself without it.  However, leave it to the Swiss to elevate the mundane to its full potential in beauty and quality.  In the 1800’s, one of Switzerland’s most important industries was the splitting and weaving of straw into lace and decorations to create and trim the world’s most fashionable hats.  Most of the work took place in the Freiamt region, and today you can still find artisans who create the intricate straw designs that have been passed down through the generations.
